Description

A delightful baked breakfast dish featuring golden slices of bread soaked in creamy custard, topped with sweet caramelized apples and rich caramel sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 slices thick-cut bread (such as Challah or Brioche)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 medium apples (peeled, cored, and sliced, preferably Granny Smith)
  • 1 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Arrange the slices of thick-cut bread in a baking dish in a single layer.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are well soaked, and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  5. Toss the sliced apples with brown sugar and melted butter.
  6. Layer the apples over the soaked bread in the baking dish.
  7. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the apples.
  8. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts on top.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Serve warm, drizzled with remaining caramel sauce.

Notes

Use day-old bread for best texture. Customize your apples or add in other fruits for variety. This dish can be prepared the night before.
