- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup chopped walnuts or pistachios
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup honey (for topping)
- Chopped nuts (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk warm milk, melted butter, and eggs until smooth.
- Form the dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ones and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough out and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 30 minutes.
- Prepare the filling: Combine chopped nuts, honey, and ground cinnamon in a bowl.
- Roll the dough: Roll out the dough into a rectangle, brush with melted butter, and spread the nut filling.
- Shape the babka: Roll the dough tightly, cut it in half lengthwise, and twist the halves together.
- Second rise: Place the twisted dough into a greased loaf pan and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30 minutes until golden brown.
- Glaze and cool: Drizzle warm babka with honey and let cool slightly before slicing.
