Description
A creamy, delicate dessert with the subtle sweetness of vanilla that’s perfect for any gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Ground nutmeg for sprinkling
- Fresh berries for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place a 1 1/2-quart round baking dish inside a larger deep baking pan to create a water bath.
- In a small saucepan, warm the milk until bubbles form around the edge. Remove from heat immediately.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, granulated sugar, and salt until blended.
- Gradually whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into the baking dish and sprinkle with ground nutmeg.
- Place the baking pan onto the oven rack and fill it with hot water until it reaches 1/2 inch below the baking dish rim.
- Bake for 55 to 60 minutes until a knife inserted comes out clean, with the center slightly jiggly.
- Remove the baking dish from the water bath and let it cool for 30 minutes before refrigerating until chilled.
- Serve cold, optionally garnished with fresh berries.
Notes
For extra flavor, infuse milk with vanilla bean. You can also try adding almond extract or lemon zest.
