Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • Pink and orange food coloring
  • Royal icing for decorations
  • Edible glitter or sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  2. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the butter mixture and mix well.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions, adding pink food coloring to one and orange to the other, kneading until evenly distributed.
  6. Wrap each portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 60 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a floured surface.
  9. Cut out heart shapes with a cookie cutter and place them on the baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until edges are light golden.
  11. Cool the cookies on wire racks completely.
  12. Decorate with royal icing and let it set. Add edible glitter or sprinkles if desired.
  13. Let the decorated cookies dry completely before serving or packaging.
