- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons cold butter, cut into chunks
- 1 egg
- 1 cup raisins or currants (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- Grease a cast iron skillet or baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add buttermilk and egg, mixing gently to form a slightly sticky dough.
- If using, fold in raisins or currants.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and shape into a round loaf.
- Make a deep cross cut on the top of the loaf.
- Place on the prepared skillet and bake for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
Don’t overmix to maintain a tender crumb. Store leftover slices at room temperature for a few days or freeze for later enjoyment.
