Description

An impressive pastry braid filled with savory mushrooms and melted Gruyère cheese, perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Incorporate the sliced mushrooms, thyme, salt, and black pepper, and sauté for about 8-10 minutes until browned. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle approximately 10×14 inches.
  6. Create a tick-tack-toe pattern by cutting slits on the longer sides of the pastry, leaving a strip in the center.
  7. Place the mushroom mixture down the center of the puff pastry and top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
  8. Begin braiding by folding the pastry strips over the filling, alternating sides.
  9. Brush the top with the beaten egg for a golden color when baked.
  10. Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for about 25-30 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Consider adding lemon juice to the filling for brightness. This dish can be customized with additional vegetables or different cheeses.
