Description

Indulge in these deliciously messy Sloppy Joes, a nostalgic classic perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeds and ribs removed, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. yellow mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Kosher salt and Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 cup canned tomato sauce
  • 6 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil until shimmering.
  2. Cook onion and bell pepper, stirring occasionally, until softened and slightly golden, approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Add ketchup and cook, stirring occasionally, until reduced to a thick paste, about 7 to 10 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and chili powder, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add vinegar, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce; season with salt and pepper.
  6. Increase heat to high and add ground beef, breaking it apart with a fork until crumbly.
  7. Cook, stirring frequently, until browned, about 5 minutes.
  8. Add tomato sauce and bring to a boil, stirring to combine.
  9. Let cool slightly; season with salt if needed.
  10. Divide beef mixture among buns and serve.

Store leftover Sloppy Joe mixture in airtight containers; freezes well for up to 3 months.
